Nato's choice of Gazimestan as the first monument to be handed over to the Kosovan police service (KPS) , dominated by ethnic Albanians, is highly unusual and provocative. Gazimestan marks the site of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo against the Ottomans. It is where Slobodan Milosevic rallied Serb activists 600 years later, with a nationalist speech that propelled him to power. Taking over the authority for security of Gazimestan monument will be the first case where KPS will assume responsibility for security of Serb cultural monuments in Kosovo.
